2001년 영국 컨템포러리 R&B의 기대주가 크레이그 데이빗(Craig David)이라면

미국에게는 인디아 아리가 있다.

모던 클래식 소울의 새 장을 연 그녀의 데뷔작 [Acoustic Soul]은

앨범 타이틀이 그 사운드 를 잘 대변해 주고있다.

어쿠스틱 기타 연주를 기반 으로 그녀의 목소리는

흑인 특유의 영혼이 담긴 소리를 만들어 내고 있다.

그러나 이 앨범은 정통 소울 앨범이 아니다.

컨템포러리 뮤지션답게 그녀는 힙합 스타일을 결합한 모던 소울을 만들어 내고 있으며,

그것은 앨범 전체적으로 부드러우면서도 센스와 유연성 있는 비트와 리듬감을 만들어 낸다.

무엇보다 이 앨범의 가장 큰 매력은 어쿠스틱 기타를 기반으 로 R&B 앨범이라는 것.

인디아 아리 자신은 R&B, 소울 뮤지션이 아닌

그 외곽에 놓인 블루스, 재즈 뮤지션으로부터 많은 영향 받았음을 밝히고 있다.

60년대 정통 블루스 여성 싱어 마 레이니(Ma Rainey)를 비롯해,

블루스 명 기타리스트 스티비 레이 본(Stevie Ray Vaughan),

카펜터스(The Carpenters)의 캐런 카펜터(Karen Carpenter),

재즈의 전설 마일스 데이비스(Miles Davis),

그리고 70년대 소울 뮤지션 도니 해터웨 이(Donny Hathaway)가 그들.

이 네임 리스트만으로도 그녀가 과거의 전통을 현대적으로 계승하고 있음을 눈치 챌 수 있다.

앨범 마지막 수록곡인 `Wonderful`은 스티비 원더(Stevie Wonder)에게 헌사하는 노래이지만,

스티비 원더 역시 그녀를 가장 아끼는 후배의 반열에 올려놓고 있다.

또한 대선배 샤데(Sade) 역시 그녀와 함께 투어를 가질 정도로

인디아 아리가 R&B, 소울 씬을 이끌어 갈 남다른 기대주임을 단적으로 드러낸다.

이 앨범은 브라이언 맥나잇(Brian Mcknight)에게서 느낄 수 없는

소울 풀하며 블루스적인 뉘앙스를 느낄 수 있는 작품.

또한 어쿠스틱 기타를 든 그녀는 마치 R&B계의 트레이시 채프먼(Tracy Chapman)처럼 느껴진다.
